I used to translate PC manuals for general purpose computers
At that time, about 20 years ago, there was some translation software, but neither English to Japanese nor Japanese to English was very accurate. So I was paid quite well. Sometimes, I was asked if I knew of any good translation software, but if there was any, I would have lost my job.
Once someone asked me, “I used translation software and it says ‘donkey’ here, do you know why?” I found out that the name ‘Robert’ was translated to donkey because ‘roba’ is donkey in Japanese. We couldn’t help but laugh.
Now, in my iPhone, I have an app that can translate about fifty different languages, and I find that it works well. I don’t need an electronic dictionary any more.

当時、約20年前には、英訳、和訳とも本当に使えるソフトはありませんでした。というわけで給料は良かったです。時々「いい翻訳ソフト知らない？」と訊かれることがありましたが、もしあったなら私は仕事にありつけなかったでしょう。
ある時「ソフトを使って翻訳したら「ドンキー」っていう言葉が出てきたんだけどどうしてかわかる？」と訊かれたことがあり、よく読んでみたところ、「ロバート」という名前がドンキーと訳されていました。ロバはドンキーですから。2人でお笑いしました。
今私のiPhoneに50ヵ国語以上翻訳できるアプリが入っています。結構役に立ちます。電子辞書もいらなくなりました。
