It started with Ms. S, one of the neighbours.
She retired when she was 50 years old and moved here. She teaches me many things about how to live in the countryside. I was able to help her buy a new PC and set it up for her.
Ms. S used to use prepaid cell phone, but she became interested in having a smartphone so I helped her to get one. That was about 3 years ago.
It took her some time, but she got used to it. She was happy that it wasn’t that expensive, about 2000 yen a month. But I felt the display of the smartphone was too small and it bothered me a lot. It seems that eyesight gets worse year by year, for all of us. It is unavoidable.
About 18 months later, I found a 7 inch tablet that can also be used as a smartphone. I got one to see if it is OK, then recommended it to Ms. S. She asked me to get one for her right away. It was nice that we had the same tablet model. I could check with mine and explain to her what to do when she was in trouble. She didn’t have a navigator in her car, so she could use the tablet for that too.
One day she showed it to one of her friends, Ms. R, and Ms. R wanted to get one too. It was something new for her and she was anxious, so I told her that I would help her as much as possible.
I got a new tablet for Ms. R and we decided to have a small class ‘how to use a tablet’. Ms. S offered her house for the class so one day we gathered in her house. Unexpectedly, Mr. F joined us there too. He had a smartphone but didn’t know how to use it at all. He didn’t even know how to answer the phone. Eventually, Mr. F also decided to get a tablet instead of the smartphone, as it was easier to operate.
Little by little, I now have about 15 people asking me for help when they are in trouble. I’m happy to get to know people because of something I am good at.
ことの初めは近所のSさんでした。
Sさんは50歳で早期退職され田舎に移住、大先輩です。知り合いが時々書き込みをしていたブログの持ち主で私が土地を買ったところに住んでいらしたので、私もブログに書き込みをしていろいろと教えて欲しいと頼みました。とても気さくな良い方です。PCぐらいしかお手伝いのできることがなかった私ですが、新しいノートPCの購入のお手伝いや設定をさせていただきました。
Sさんはプリペイドの携帯電話を使っていました。近所の方が「らくらくスマホ」というのを手に入れ、「便利そうね。私にも使えるかしら？」でスマホに乗り換えることにしました。
ネットでらくらくスマホを手に入れ、最低限のアプリをダウンロードできるように設定し、プリペイドの携帯電話の残高が使い終わるまで家のWiFiに繋いで使い方に慣れて貰いました。それから格安シムを入れました。3年ほど前のことです。
ネット検索もできて一ヵ月2000円ぐらいと安いしと喜んで貰いましたが、それでもその時のらくらくスマホは画面が小さくあまり使い勝手が良いとは言えず、私はかなり気になっていました。
そして約１年半後に見つけたのが通話もできる7インチタブレットでした。私は買い物サイトのポイントがたまっていたので一台手に入れて試してみました。それをSさんに見せたところ「大きくて見やすいわ。同じのをお願いできる？」
早速手に入れ、格安シムを移しました。Sさんの車にはカーナビがありませんでしたが、タブレットで使い方を覚え活用するようになりました。同じ機種があるので問題があると「ここどうしたらいい？」で私も試してすぐに対応できたのでお互いに楽でした。
数ヵ月後、Sさんが友達Rさんにそれを見せたところ「私でも使えるかしら？スマホなんて雲の上の存在だわ。」ということでしたが、「頭の体操と思って頑張りましょう。できる限りお手伝いしますから。」
新しく手に入れたタブレット兼スマホをRさんに教えるのにSさんが場所を提供してくれることになりました。Sさんの家に行くとスマホを手にしたFさんもいました。「スマホに変えたけど使い方がわからないので教えてください。」と。
3人からひっきりなしに来る質問、SさんとRさんのタブレット兼スマホが大きくて見やすいのでFさんも「それに変えたいな。」
ということで3人同じ機種になりました。RさんもFさんもそれまでインターネットを使ったことがありませんでしたが、いろんなことが調べられるしできるようになったと喜んでくれました。
その後芋ずる式に生徒さん(？)が増え、今では困った時に頼ってくれる方が15人を越しました。
完全ボランティアですが、ランチをご馳走あるいは野菜や果物をいただいたりでありがたいです。少しずつですが、知り合いも増えていくのも嬉しいです。
